Behind the Whistle: The Role of Referees and Officials

Roller derby is a fast-paced and thrilling sport that wouldn’t be possible without skating and non-skating officials’ dedication and hard work. While the spotlight often shines on the skaters and their impressive athletic ability, the referees and officials play a crucial role in ensuring that the game is fair, safe, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

One of the most critical responsibilities of this team of awesome individuals is enforcing the rules of the game. Roller derby has a unique set of rules and regulations, and it’s up to the referees and officials to ensure these rules are followed. This requires a deep understanding of the game and its intricacies and the ability to make quick decisions in the heat of the moment.

In addition to enforcing the rules, referees and officials also prioritize the safety of the skaters. They keep a close eye on the action, looking for any unsafe or illegal maneuvers that could put the skaters at risk of injury. By maintaining a safe and controlled environment, referees and officials help to ensure that roller derby remains an exciting but safe sport for everyone involved.

Furthermore, officials act as impartial arbitrators, making objective calls and judgments throughout the game. Their ability to make fair and unbiased decisions is essential in maintaining the integrity of the sport and upholding the spirit of healthy competition.

Skating Officials

As skating officials, referees wear roller skates during practice and bouts. They are welcome to skate alongside MSRD players during practices and are responsible for ensuring safety and fairness during scrimmages and games.

Non-Skating Officials (NSOs)

NSOs manage various officiating positions during scrimmages or bouts without being on skates. Some of these rockstar positions include scorekeepers, lineup trackers, penalty box timers, penalty trackers, and jam timers. All officials must be 18 years or older, and individuals of all genders are welcome to join our officiating team.

Behind every successful roller derby bout is a dedicated team of officials working tirelessly behind the scenes. Their passion for the sport and commitment to upholding its standards make them indispensable to the roller derby community. Their dedication is something we are eternally grateful for. So, the next time you’re watching a roller derby bout, take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the referees and officials who help make the game possible!
