Gear Guide: An Equipment Checklist

Safety is always our top priority. Proper gear is a vital part of that. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the crucial equipment you need to excel in the world of roller derby:

Quad Roller Skates

A good pair of quad roller skates is the most fundamental piece of equipment for roller derby. Look for skates with ankle support, a durable build, and a snug fit for optimal performance and safety.

Please note that while heeled-, ultra-high ankle boots are gorgeous and great for recreational and dance/jam skating, these types of boots are not recommended for roller derby.

Helmet

Protecting your head is paramount in a high-impact sport like roller derby. Invest in a quality helmet that meets safety standards to reduce the risk of head injuries.

It is recommended to have a practice helmet and a game helmet.

Knee Pads

As a roller derby player, you’ll be spending a lot of time on your knees. Properly fitting knee pads with ample cushioning and robust protection are crucial for preventing injuries during falls and collisions.

Elbow Pads

Like knee pads, elbow pads are essential for safeguarding joints and preventing abrasions during intense roller derby bouts.

Wrist Guards

Wrist guards are designed to protect your wrists from impact and hyperextension, which are common risks in roller derby. Look for wrist guards that provide sturdy support without restricting your range of motion.

Mouthguard

Protecting your teeth and mouth is non-negotiable. A well-fitted mouthguard will shield your pearly whites from potential impact and collisions.

Wheels

A beginner set of skates will typically include some low-quality wheels. If you find these wheels are too slippery, you can order some wheels with a smaller number and vice versa. The smaller the number, the stickier the wheel.

Wheels are a whole thing, so please reach out to members of your league with questions. The wheels that come with one’s skate typically suffice while learning to skate and learning the ropes of roller derby.

Remember, investing in high-quality gear is investing in your safety and longevity as a roller derby player. Prioritize comfort, fit, and durability when selecting your equipment, and always ensure that it meets safety standards for your peace of mind on the track.

Like many other leagues, Mid-State Roller Derby offers loaner gear for new skaters to try before investing in their own set. Our team will also share some of our gear experiences with you, providing as much information as we can to help you choose the right gear.
