Joining Roller Derby: A Beginner’s Guide

Are you captivated by the high-energy, action-packed world of roller derby?  Roller derby is a dynamic, full-contact sport that takes place on roller skates, offering a fantastic opportunity for personal growth, forging new friendships, and enjoying an exhilarating experience.

Whether you’re enticed by the sense of community, the challenge, or simply the excitement of the sport, joining a roller derby team can be an invigorating adventure. To help kickstart your roller derby journey, here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Learn about the sport

Before diving in, it’s essential to understand what roller derby is all about. Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams, with five members roller skating counter-clockwise around a track. The main objective is for the designated scoring player, called the jammer, to lap members of the opposing team. There are specific rules and strategies, so familiarize yourself by watching games online, attending local games, and reading up on the basic rules and positions.

2. Find a local league

Roller derby is a community-driven sport with leagues worldwide. Start by doing an online search for roller derby in your area. There are ~432 Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) member leagues on six continents. Attend a few practices or games to get a feel for the team dynamics and the atmosphere.

Mid-State Roller Derby (MSRD) is located in Central Wisconsin. Our members include individuals from the Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield, and surrounding areas.

3. Attend a game

Before you commit to joining a league, attend a game to see what roller derby is all about. You’ll see the sport in action and can then talk to some of the skaters afterwards. You can also ask questions to understand the league’s culture better.

4. Attend a beginner’s practice

Most roller derby leagues offer “New Skater” programs tailored for beginners. These programs are designed to teach you the basics of skating, derby skills, and the rules of the game in a supportive environment. Whether you’re a complete novice or have some experience, these programs cater to all skill levels, so don’t worry if you’ve never skated before. Attending a beginner’s practice can be a great way to start and meet other skaters.

MSRD offers multiple new skater classes throughout the year, where you can learn how to skate and play roller derby. Individuals interested in joining can also drop in at one of our regular practices to get started. Contact us to schedule a drop-in practice or view our new skater class opportunities here.

5. Get the right gear

To play roller derby, you’ll need the right equipment. This includes:

  • Quad Roller Skates: Specifically designed for roller derby, they offer better control and stability.
  • Helmet: Protect your head with a certified multi-impact helmet.
  • Protective Pads: Knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a mouthguard are essential for safety.
  • Appropriate Clothing: Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for full movement.

When starting with MSRD, loaner gear is available until you can get your own.

6. Practice, practice, practice

Roller derby is a challenging sport that requires a lot of practice. You’ll need to work on your skating skills, endurance, and strategy. Most leagues practice several times a week – we host practices 2-3 times a week from Jan – Aug*, so be prepared to commit some time to training.

In addition to attending practices, you’ll want to work on your endurance, strength, and flexibility. Cross-training with activities like running, cycling, and weightlifting can be beneficial. Building core strength and lower body power is crucial for effective skating and stability.

*MSRD members who have passed the required skills are required to attend 50% of practices to be eligible for gameplay.

7. Get to know the community

Roller derby is as much about community as it is about the sport. Engage with your teammates, attend league events, and volunteer when you can. The more involved you are, the more rewarding your experience will be. The roller derby community is known for being inclusive and supportive, so don’t be shy about reaching out and making connections.

8. Understand the commitment

Joining a roller derby team requires a significant commitment of time and energy. Practices, bouts, and team events will take up a considerable portion of your schedule. Make sure you are prepared to balance this with your other responsibilities.

Communication is key – let your team know about any potential conflicts early on.

9. Have fun!

Roller derby can be challenging, especially when you’re just starting out. It’s normal to feel frustrated or overwhelmed at times. Remember to have fun and enjoy the journey – keep a positive attitude, celebrate your progress, and remember why you wanted to join in the first place.

The fun, friendships, and sense of accomplishment you’ll gain are well worth the effort, and all you’re hard work and dedication will help you become a skilled and confident roller derby player!

10. Keep at it and hit the track!

After completing a new skater program and gaining confidence in your skills, you’re ready to officially join the team!

But remember – learning is ongoing in roller derby. Keep attending practices, seeking feedback, and honing your skills. Whether you aim to be a jammer, a blocker, or even a coach one day, there’s always room for progress and development.

Entering the world of roller derby is an exhilarating adventure filled with physical obstacles, individual development, and a supportive community. By following these guidelines, you’ll be on the path to becoming a valued member of your local roller derby squad. Strap on your skates, head to the track, and enjoy the journey!
